Ramadan @Mandarin Oriental
Ramadan @Mandarin Oriental
Break fast with family and friends at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur this Ramadan with over 100 local and international dishes at Mosaic, Lounge on the Park, as well as the Diamond Ballroom from June 6 to July 5.
Over at Mosaic, savour a myriad of dishes prepared by the culinary team led by Chef de Cuisine Andreas Block.
At the media review, we were served Paceri Nenas (Pineapple Paceri), Urap Sayuran (Jackfruit and tempeh salad), Kerabu Sotong Tradisi (Spicy and sour squid salad), and Otak Otak Bakar Daun Nipah (Baked fish mousse in palm leaf) for appetisers.
For appetisers, there’s also an assortment of kerabu such as Urap Nangka Tampe, Kerabu Mangga Muda Ikan Bilis, Ulam Kampung with eggs and salted fish, and Tauhu Sumbat Bersayu.
Local snacks such as Keropok Lekor, Serunding Daging Mak Tok, Kerepek Ubi Kayu Pedas, and curry puffs are also available.
For mains, we had Kashmiri Briyani (Steamed Basmathi rice with fresh herbs and spices), Ayam Percik Pantai Timur (Grilled chicken in turmeric coconut sauce and pineapple), Gulai Kawah Rusuk Rebung Madu (Curry beef ribs with honey bamboo shoots), Sambal Tumis Udang Harimau Petai (Spicy tiger prawns in chili), Ikan Talang Masin Goreng Asam (Deep-fried salted fish with tamarind and chili), and Sayur Lemak Lodeh (Braised mixed vegetable with turmeric coconut sauce).
I enjoyed the Kashmiri Briyani and grilled chicken, while my colleague Chan Tak Kong gave the Kambing Kuzi Rencah Asli (Braised Lamb ouzi with local spices) a thumbs up, as the spices complemented the lamb which was tender.
Other main courses that would be available for the buka puasa buffet include the traditional Lemang, Rendang Daging, Nasi Minyak, Lemang Bakar Pulut Susu, Nyonya Curry Laksa, Chicken and Beef Satay, Murtabak, Roti Canai, and Kari Ayam.
For something warm and comforting, there’s Sup Kambing Mamak or Bubur Lambok.
According to malay sous chef Kamarudin Dali or more commonly known as Chef Din, the buka puasa buffet attracts not just locals but foreign guests too.
“Aside from the usual international spread, they get to try local cuisines too as well as special buka puasa dishes,” the Perlis native said.
The chef with over 10 years of experience in authentic Malay cuisine shares his family’s age-old recipe of Beef Rendang, “It has been a family tradition to prepare this dish whenever we celebrate back home and it is my favourite dish ever since I was young. The meat texture depends very much on the preparation method and quality of the meat.”
If you enjoy international cuisine, you will be spoiled for choice at the grill, wok, noodle and tandoor station.
These stations include a variety of pizzas; fresh homemade pastas; Lamb Chops; Crispy Roasted Chicken with Thai Mango Salad; Buttered Tiger Prawns; Stir-Fried Grouper with Fermented Bean and Pepper.
One of the highlights of the ‘buka puasa’ spread at Mosaic is the special showcase of local fruits such as durian and mangosteen, all presented at the outdoor terrace of Lounge on the Park.
I was pretty stuffed when we were served the Bubur Pulut Hitam Gula Nipah (Black sticky rice in coconut palm sugar syrup) and Onde-Onde with Gula Melaka.
However after the first bite, I finished both desserts. I enjoyed the sticky rice dessert as it was not too sweet; the amount of gula melaka in the onde-onde was just right.
Sweet selections like Bubur Kacang Bersago, Putu Buluh Bambu, dates, Malay kuih, Ice Kacang, and Chilled Longan with Almond Bean Curd in Syrup are displayed at the Mosaic’s dessert island and Lounge on the Park.
The Buka Puasa buffet is priced at RM 188 nett per person and RM 94 nett per child (four to 11 years old) at Mosaic and Lounge on the Park. Patrons will get to enjoy a special price of RM 138 nett per person and RM 69 nett per child (4 to 11 years old) for bookings made on June 6 to 12 as well as July 4 and 5.
Groups of four and above can also enjoy Buka Puasa in the Diamond Ballroom from June 13 June to July 3 at RM 158 nett per person and RM 79 nett per child (4 to 11 years old). The ballroom promises a banquet-like showcase of not only authentic Malay, but also Chinese and Indian favourites with live-action stations – great large gatherings of friends and business partners.
The Hari Raya Festive Desk, located at the Lobby Level from May 20 to July 8 from 10am to 9pm, will be highlighting an array of quintessential festive hampers and goodies that are perfect for gifting to family, friends and business partners.
