International Museum Day: Lotte World Folk Museum

In conjunction with International Museum Day, which falls on May 18 annually, here's a museum I visited over a decade ago----the Lotte World Folk Museum.

My friend invited me along to a traditional Korean wedding at the museum, which is located at Lotte World in Songpa-gu.

As a museum buff, this was music to my ears.

Thanks to my friend, I had the chance to not only witness a traditional wedding, I also visited the Lotte World Folk Museum.

The unique traditional wedding ceremony was held at the traditional wedding space at the museum. The bride entered on a palanquin and there were pansori (Korean storytelling in a musical style) and samulnori (a performance of Korean traditional percussion instruments).

I was lucky to be able to witness an actual traditional wedding ceremony was held at the wedding space at the museum.

Later we enjoyed a sumptuous buffet spread before heading to the museum.

Lotte World Folk Museum showcases Korea’s 5000 years of history and folk culture through actual relics and miniature displays, including model villages from different periods of history, giving visitors a glimpse of what life in Korea may have looked like back then.

I love the miniature displays and cute figurines.

The museum features permanent displays and special exhibitions.

There are many photo opportunities. We had fun posing with ancient farming tools.

Visitors can take photos using the props at the museum.

I’m sure that even if you are not a big fan of museums and history like me, you would find the interactive features interesting. The museum also offers education programs and traditional culture experience classes.

Aside from the traditional wedding space, the museum also has a restaurant and souvenir shop.

At the souvenir shop, it was fun discovering snacks from yesteryears, even my Korean friends were excited to find childhood snacks. There was a staff making dalgona candy on the spot, it was fascinating even before the Squid Game fad.

More information such as entrance fee and opening hours can be found on its website: https://adventure.lotteworld.com/museum/main/index.do

It seemed like the website is only in Korean, thankfully there is google translate.

Overall, it was a fun and informative experience. I would love to revisit this museum; I recommend this museum to all.
