At Berjaya Times Square Hotel’s Samplings On The Fourteenth Restaurant, we sit facing a window overlooking the Kuala Lumpur skyline in anticipation of chef de cuisine Valmurugan Subramaniam’s creations.
A lot of effort has gone into the creation of his Valentine’s Day set, and we cannot wait to dig in.
We start the four-course dinner with Pan-Seared Foie Gras with Balsamic Jelly, Dried Cherry Confit and Butter Scotch.
I have to admit I am not a fan of foie gras, but the sweet and tangy balsamic jelly and dried cherry confit provides a nice balance to its rich taste, making this a palatable appetiser.

Next is the Chicken Consommé flavoured with Sherry Brandy and served with Chicken Quenelle and Poached Quail Egg garnish. I thoroughly enjoyed the concentrated flavours of the consommé.
The quenelle is tender and the bite-sized quail egg is a delight.

For mains, you have a choice of Pan-Roasted Cod Fillet with Artichoke, Couscous and Saffron Aniseed Reduction or Braised Beef Cheek with Smoked Garlic, Mashed Potatoes and Truffle Jus.
I opt for the Australian cod, which is served with both flower and Jerusalem artichoke. The flavourful couscous and juicy mushroom complement the cod well.

As for the beef, the chef says it is marinated in red wine and flavoured with cinnamon, juniper berry, and thyme among other delightful ingredients. With all the flavours incorporated into the beef, salt is not needed.
Fans of truffles may be delighted to know that the dish is prepared with truffles, truffle jus and truffle oil.
“The beef is quickly seared on a hot pan. I chose chat potatoes as it’s good for a smooth texture when mashed, unlike Idaho potatoes, which have a chunky texture,” said Valmurugan.
I always look forward to dessert, more so if it is from a Valentine’s Day menu, and the Vanilla and Brie Panna Cotta Elder Flower Essence and Honeycomb does not disappoint.
With the pink panna cotta as the centrepiece, the dessert is a work of art.

I am not a huge fan of panna cotta as some versions are too creamy for my liking, but the chef’s version is dreamy. The elder flower essence help accentuate the taste of the custard.
The Valentine’s dinner set (RM298 nett per adult) is inclusive of dinner, pictures at the photo booth, a door gift (a stalk of rose for the lady) and a lucky draw. This is excluding wine.
Lucky draw prizes include cash vouchers worth RM50 and RM100 from Pink Evil’s Fashion, a 2D/1N stay in Berjaya Times Square Hotel’s Superior room worth up to RM1,000, and Big Apple Restaurant high tea vouchers.
The hotel’s Big Apple Restaurant is also offering a three-course Valentine’s Dinner set at RM98nett.
