Naesosa (Naeso Temple) in Jeollabuk-do

In conjunction with Buddha's Birthday on May 19, I would like to share about my trip to a Korean Buddhist Temple Naesosa (Naeso Temple).

It was one of the places I visited during my trip to the Jeollabuk-do province several years ago.

According to information at the temple, Naesosa was built by Haegu Duta monk in 633, the 34th year of King Mu of Baekje Kingdom.

It was named soresa temple and there were two temples: Big Soresa temple and Small Soresa temple. However, the big one was destroyed by fire and the other remains as the present Naesosa.

The present temple was rebuilt in 1633, during the 11th year of King Injo by Master Ven.Chongmin and was repaired in 1865.

It is unknown why Soresa was later renamed to Naesosa.

We reached there in the late afternoon, the chill Autumn air added to the serene atmosphere of the temple grounds.

After the entrance, we walked through the trail and saw many huge fir trees.

I saw a sign stating that this was one of the filming sites for the famous K-drama Daejanggeum (Jewel in the Palace).

The temple has several tangible cultural objects.

Among them are Treasure No. 291: Daeungbojeon, the main worship hall at Naesosa and Treasure No. 277 Goryeodongjong , a bronze bell made during the Goryeo Dynasty.

Devotees were seen praying inside the main worship hall. There were some tourists during our visit but it was not crowded.

There are several food stalls and eateries outside the temple if you want to grab a bite.
